The 2008 Saturn Astra is more of an experiment in the United States, since the replica was successful over in Europe, selling close to 500,000 units this past year. Replacing the unproductive Ion, the Astra comes is available in two hatchbacks, a four-door and a more sleek-looking two-door.

The four-door hatchback has either an XE or XR trim level, while the two-door is prepped with the higher XR trim level. The XE body trim is furnished with 16-inch wheels, a CD player, trip computer, full power accessories, cruise control and rain-sensing wipers. The XR trim adds alloy wheels, an upgraded audio system and air-conditioning. Most of the XR features are optional on the XE trim.

Equipped with a 1.8-liter engine, the front-wheel-drive Astra produces 138-horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. Across the ocean, the model offers other engines such as diesels and turbos.

Incorporating OnStar and a one year of complimentary Safe and Sound Service, the 2008 Saturn Astra includes plenty of standard safety features. Frontal airbags, side torso airbags for the front seats, active head restraints and side curtains are included.

More aggressive than the Chevy Cobalt and Honda Civic, you’ll get your moneys worth. Allowing a whole new consumer market is easy for the 2008 Saturn Astra.
